Protecting Your Child’s Smile While Playing Sports with Braces

Fall sports season is here, and if your child is undergoing orthodontic treatment, you may be wondering how braces and athletics work together. The good news is that kids with braces can absolutely stay active and enjoy their favorite sports. However, taking a few extra precautions can help protect their teeth, braces, and overall treatment.

Why a Mouthguard Matters

  • A mouthguard is one of the best ways to protect your child’s smile during sports. A hard hit to the face can damage teeth, lips, cheeks, and orthodontic appliances. For children wearing braces, a properly designed mouthguard can provide an extra layer of protection between their braces and the soft tissues inside their mouth.

Choose the Right Mouthguard

  • Not all mouthguards are ideal for children with braces. Stock and boil-and-bite mouthguards may not provide enough room as teeth move during orthodontic treatment.

An orthodontic mouthguard is designed specifically for children wearing braces. It typically provides more space around the brackets and can accommodate changes as treatment progresses. Dr. Gentry recommends SISU brand mouthguards with braces.

Make Protection Part of the Routine

  • Encourage your child to wear their mouthguard during every practice and game—not just during competition. It should fit comfortably and securely without interfering with breathing or speaking.

It’s also a good idea to check the mouthguard regularly for signs of wear or damage. Because your child’s teeth are moving throughout treatment, the fit may change over time.

What If a Brace Gets Damaged?

  • Accidents happen. If your child takes a hit and a bracket, wire, or other part of their braces becomes damaged, contact our office. We can determine whether an orthodontic appointment is needed and help keep treatment on track.

Sports are an important part of childhood, and braces shouldn’t keep your child on the sidelines. With the right mouthguard and a few simple precautions, your child can stay active while protecting their smile throughout orthodontic treatment.
