Back-to-School = Back to Braces Breaks? How to Avoid Broken Brackets This School Year

It’s that time again—new classes, new schedules, new backpacks… and for some, a new set of braces.  While heading back to school is exciting, it can also mean getting back into a routine—and sometimes, that includes unexpected orthodontic issues like broken brackets.

At Gentry Orthodontics, we know life gets busy, especially during the school year. But a few simple habits can go a long way in keeping your treatment on track and avoiding delays caused by broken brackets. Let’s break down the most common causes—and how to avoid them.

Lunchtime Landmines: Foods That Break Brackets

Certain snacks and lunch choices can do serious damage to your braces. The biggest culprits?

  • Sticky foods like bubblegum, taffy, and candy
  • Hard foods like nuts, popcorn, and some chips (Takis are the WORST!)
  • Crunchy treats like whole apples or raw carrots (cut them up instead!)
  • Pro tip(s): Pack braces-friendly snacks like yogurt, cheese sticks, soft fruits, and sandwiches. Chew sugar-free gum like Orbit, 5, or Extra.
  • If it can crack a tooth or cause a cavity, then it’s terrible for braces.

Accidents During Sports or PE

Contact sports and active play can sometimes result in accidental hits to the face. Even a friendly game of dodgeball can become a braces hazard.

Avoid it:

  • Wear a mouthguard during sports (even non-contact ones!)
  • Keep it in your gym bag so you’re always prepared

Fidgeting and Bad Habits

  • Chewing on pens, pencils, fingernails, or even water bottle caps can easily pop a bracket loose. And yes—it happens more than you’d think during class.
  • Kick the habit: Try a stress ball or fidget toy instead to keep hands busy (and brackets safe).

Skipping Your Oral Hygiene Routine

  • Poor brushing habits can weaken the adhesive that holds your brackets in place—and lead to cavities or white spots.

Stick with it:

  • Brush after meals (or at least twice a day)
  • Floss daily with braces-friendly tools
  • Use a fluoride rinse if recommended
